Laparoscopic Surgical Campaign

laparascopicsurgery.jpg

Laparoscopic surgery is the most modern surgical technique performed where surgical procedures are performed through small incisions utilizing high definition crystal clear micro cameras and micro surgical instruments as compared to larger more invasive incisions with traditional surgical instruments. For the patient there is a significant reduction in the length of recovery time and less pain from smaller incisions and hemorrhaging. Incisions can be as small as 0.5 cm.

The high definition laparoscopic surgical cameras and instruments will be able to locate and extra the smallest of cancers with heightened efficiency, and also be utilized in many other types of surgical procedures at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital.

The goal of the Moose Jaw Health Foundation's laparoscopic campaign is to equip each of the three operating theatres at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital with a state-of-the-art laparoscopic video tower and specialized surgical instruments. The specialized surgical instruments include: laparoscopic general surgical tools, gynecological laparoscopic surgical tools, and the addition of new paediatric laparoscopic surgical tools. Currently, only paediatric appendectomy surgery is performed at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital.

The goal of the laparoscopic surgical campaign will be to raise $555,000 for three new laparoscopic surgical towers and specialized instruments. The addition of this new surgical equipment will allow the highly trained surgical teams to substantially increase the number of surgeries performed and there will be a significant reduction in the chance of infection and complications. In addition hospital stays for patients will be shorter due to the less invasive nature of the surgery; therefore, wait lists will be reduced.

Only through the generosity of donors is the $555,000 goal possible. This campaign will establish the Moose Jaw Union Hospital as a centre of surgical excellence for the province of Saskatchewan. This campaign will provide highly trained medical professional with the best laparoscopic equipment in North America.

Laparoscopy is easier on the patient because it uses a few very small incisions. For example, traditional "open surgery" on the abdomen usually requires a four- to five-inch incision through layers of skin and muscle. In laparoscopic surgery, the doctor usually makes two to three incisions that are about a half-inch long.

The smaller incisions cause less damage to body tissue, organs, and muscles so that the patient

can go home sooner;

Depending on the kind of surgery, patients may be able to return home a few hours after the operation, or after a brief stay in the hospital.

will recover quicker;

Many people can return to work and their normal routine three to five days after surgery. In contrast, traditional laparotomy (traditional surgery with large incisions) may require a person to limit daily activities for four to eight weeks.

experiences fewer post-operative complications and less pain; and

The amount of discomfort varies with the kind of surgery. In most cases, however, patients feel little soreness from the incisions, which heal within a few days. Most need little or no pain medicine.

less scaring.

The incisions for most kinds of laparoscopic surgery heal without noticeable scars. In laparoscopic surgery on a woman's reproductive system, for instance, one incision usually can be hidden in the belly button area.
